How to choose the size of a wheelchair?
Just like clothes, wheelchairs should fit. The right size can make all parts evenly stressed, not only comfortable, but also can prevent adverse consequences. Our main suggestions are as follows:
(1) Selection of seat width: The patient sits in a wheelchair, and there is a 5cm gap on the left and right between the body and the side panel of the wheelchair;
(2) Selection of seat length: The patient is sitting in a wheelchair, and the distance between the popliteal fossa (right behind the knee, the depression at the connection between the thigh and the calf) and the front edge of the seat should be 6.5 cm;
(3) Selection of backrest height: Generally, the difference between the upper edge of the backrest and the patient's armpit is about 10cm, but it should be determined according to the functional status of the patient's trunk. The higher the backrest, the more stable the patient sat; the lower the backrest, the more convenient the movement of the trunk and upper limbs.
(4) Selection of foot pedal height: the pedal should be at least 5cm away from the ground. If it is a foot pedal that can be adjusted up and down, after the patient is seated, it is advisable to adjust the foot pedal so that the bottom of the front end of the thigh is 4 cm away from the seat cushion.
(5) Selection of armrest height: after the patient is seated, the elbow should be flexed 90 degrees, and then 2.5 centimeters should be added upward.
